14 migrants killed after boat collides with Greek coast guard vessel
Stockholm, February 4 (Hibya) – At least 14 migrants were killed late Tuesday night after a speedboat carrying migrants collided with a Greek coast guard vessel off the island of Chios.
Greek authorities said the speedboat was making dangerous maneuvers and that a chase was underway in the Chios Strait near the village of Vrontades at the time of the collision.
Twenty-four people were rescued, some with serious injuries, while others are reported to still be missing.
The coast guard has not yet disclosed the exact circumstances of the collision.
Late Tuesday night, search and rescue operations were ongoing with the participation of four coast guard boats, a private vessel carrying civilian divers, and a helicopter.
Greek state broadcaster ERT reported that the injured included seven children, a pregnant woman, and two coast guard officers.
Four deaths were initially reported, but an update at 11:00 p.m. local time said ten more bodies had been found, bringing the confirmed death toll to 14.
