Residents of Basel to Vote on Hosting Eurovision in Their City
Basel, October 27 (Hibya) - Residents of the Swiss city of Basel yesterday submitted a petition to the Basel Municipality requesting a public vote on hosting the Eurovision contest in their city.
The Swiss are known for their direct democracy and are accustomed to voting on numerous issues concerning the spending of tax money.
After the Swiss band Nemo won the contest in May, it became clear that Switzerland would host the contest next year. In August, it was announced that the event would be held in Basel. However, not all city residents were equally pleased with the plans.
Now, the Christian conservative EDU party has submitted a petition with 4,203 signatures demanding a referendum on the matter, twice the required number. City officials have yet to verify the signatures, but judging by the number, it is highly likely that a public vote will take place on November 24 next year.
The EDU party had previously stated that Eurovision is a platform for promoting homosexuality.
