Police: 40 killed in fire at bar in Swiss ski resort
Stockholm, Jan. 2 (Hibya) – Police said around 40 people were killed in a fire that broke out at a bar in a ski resort in southern Switzerland. Another 115 people were injured, most of them in “serious” condition.
The fire broke out at around 1:30 a.m. local time during New Year celebrations at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana.
Investigating authorities have not yet confirmed any cause, but have categorically ruled out the possibility of an attack.
People from several countries were affected. Regional police chief Frédéric Gisler said the priority in the coming days would be identifying the deceased and “rapidly returning the bodies to their families.”
It was reported that most of the injured suffered severe burns and that 60 people were taken to Sion hospital in Valais, while a “significant number” remain in critical condition.
Italy’s Foreign Ministry told the BBC that 16 Italian nationals are currently missing and that between 12 and 15 people are being treated in hospital.
France’s Foreign Ministry said eight of its citizens are missing and it cannot rule out that French nationals may be among the dead.
French media reported that at least two of the injured are French nationals.
