European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said she was deeply horrified and saddened by the images that emerged following the attack targeting many people at Bondi Beach in Sydney, as Hanukkah celebrations were beginning.

Stating that her thoughts and solidarity are with the victims of the attack as well as with the Jewish community in Australia and across the world, Metsola said: “This light will never be extinguished.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said in a statement on the attack: “I am deeply horrified and outraged by the deadly armed attack carried out against a Hanukkah event in Sydney, Australia. This attack is a direct result of the wave of antisemitic hatred that has been escalating on Australia’s streets over the past two years, and of the inciting and antisemitic calls to ‘globalize the intifada,’ which have today turned into actual violence.”

Saar added: “Despite countless warning signs, the Australian government, which failed to take the necessary steps, must now come to its senses and fulfill its responsibility.”
