Lazzarini: Lebanon needs peace
New York, March 5 (Hibya) - Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), said that escalating violence across the region has forced thousands of people in southern Lebanon to flee their homes.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated that escalating violence across the region has forced thousands of people in southern Lebanon to flee their homes.
Lazzarini said that evacuation orders issued today for four neighborhoods south of Beirut caused panic and led to larger-scale forced and mass displacement.
He stated: "As part of broader efforts by Lebanese authorities and civil society, UNRWA has opened emergency shelters for displaced persons – including Palestinian refugees, Lebanese and Syrians. Lebanon needs peace, not more destruction, displacement and death."
