Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s statements about making Germany Europe’s leading military power, drawing attention to the wording used.

Expressing his surprise at Merz’s remarks, Lavrov said, “I was shocked when Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would make Germany Europe’s leading military power ‘again’.”

Pointing to the historical dimension of the rhetoric and the risks it could create, Lavrov said, “If he does not understand what the word ‘again’ means in this context, this is extremely alarming and dangerous for Europe.”
