In the U.S., some states want polluters to pay the cost of climate disasters
New York, 9 February (Hibya) – As climate disasters drive up home insurance prices, three U.S. states are considering granting state attorneys general the authority to sue major polluters for their role in rising costs.
Proposals by lawmakers in California, Hawaii, and New York aim to hold the fossil fuel industry responsible for increasing insurance rates.
State Senator Scott Wiener said at a press conference announcing the measure on Thursday, “The cost of home insurance in California is an absolute crisis. We know that the coming years will be far more dangerous when it comes to climate disasters, and we cannot allow Californians—our residents and small businesses—to shoulder this burden.”
The proposals seek to hold the fossil fuel industry, which has contributed the most to global warming, accountable for rising insurance premiums driven by extreme weather events triggered by climate change.
In California, following the 2025 Los Angeles-area wildfires that destroyed more than 18,000 homes and properties, residents have faced sharp premium increases, widespread non-renewals of insurance policies, and thousands of delayed or denied claims.
