Guterres issues statement on Lebanon–Israel ceasefire
New York, April 24 (Hibya) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that he welcomes the three-week extension of the arrangement aimed at halting hostilities between Lebanon and Israel.
In his statement, Guterres said, “I welcome the extension of the arrangement to halt hostilities for another three weeks and appreciate the role of the United States in this process.”
Calling on the parties to fully comply with all provisions of the ceasefire, Guterres stated, “Everyone must fully respect the cessation of hostilities, stop any new attacks, and fulfill their obligations under international law.”
Addressing Hezbollah and other non-state actors, Guterres said, “Decisions to extend Lebanon’s authority across the entire country and to ensure that weapons are under the sole control of the state must be respected.”
Guterres called on Israel to completely withdraw from the north of the Blue Line.
At the end of his statement, the UN Secretary-General expressed hope that this extension will contribute to efforts for a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.
