Şahin: The key to stability in the Mediterranean is resolving the Palestinian issue
Barcelona, 29 November (Hibya) – Palestinian Foreign Minister Varseen Şahin, attending the 10th Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Forum in Barcelona, emphasized that true security and development are impossible without ending the Israeli occupation.
Foreign Minister Şahin participated in the forum, co-chaired by the European Union and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, with ministers from Arab and European countries also attending.
In his speech, Şahin stressed that the Palestinian issue lies at the heart of stability in the Mediterranean region, noting that genuine security, development, and partnership cannot be achieved without ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state.
Şahin drew attention to increased escalation, displacement, and systematic destruction in the West Bank and Gaza over the past two years, stating that this situation poses a direct threat to regional stability and requires serious international measures to protect the Palestinian people.
He also highlighted the importance of accountability and ending impunity, noting that the absence of justice weakens political and developmental efforts and renders multilateral initiatives ineffective.
Ministers from Mediterranean countries speaking at the forum reaffirmed the central role of the Palestinian issue in regional security and stability, emphasizing that lasting stability is impossible without a just and comprehensive solution based on international law and UN resolutions.
The meeting also addressed UfM’s goals — sustainable development, empowerment of youth and women, and strengthening intercultural dialogue — stressing that these objectives can only be achieved in a political environment grounded in justice and peace.
