Meloni: Press freedom is one of the cornerstones of our democracy
Rome, 29 November (Hibya) — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the importance of press freedom, stating that “violence can in no way be justified, downplayed, or reversed.”
In her statement regarding a violent incident targeting a newspaper editorial office, Meloni reacted strongly against attempts to hold the press responsible. She said: “In an act of violence against a newspaper’s editorial office, assigning responsibility — even partially — to the press is extremely serious,” calling such an approach a dangerous mistake.
The Prime Minister further stressed that violence “can in no way be justified, minimized, or distorted,” and noted that press freedom is one of the fundamental pillars of democracy: “Press freedom is one of the cornerstones of our democracy and must always be defended without any ambiguity.”
