Judge in Bolsonaro case banned from entering the U.S.
Stockholm, July 19 (Hibya) – Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes has had his U.S. visa revoked due to what the U.S. calls a "witch hunt" against former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The U.S. government announced yesterday that it revoked the visa of Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes due to his conduct during the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement about the decision: “The political witch hunt led by Brazilian Federal Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes against Jair Bolsonaro not only violates the fundamental rights of Brazilians, but has extended beyond Brazil and created a widespread industry of repression and censorship targeting Americans as well.”
The U.S. government revoked de Moraes’ visa for his behavior during Bolsonaro's prosecution.
De Moraes is serving as judge in the case against Bolsonaro, who is accused of attempting a coup after losing the 2023 Brazilian presidential election. He ordered Bolsonaro to wear an ankle monitor for surveillance during the trial.
Bolsonaro is an ally and ideological peer of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly threatened the Brazilian government over the legal cases. In response to the “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro, Trump announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian exports earlier this month.
Brazil's current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated he is open to discussing tariffs but ruled out halting Bolsonaro's prosecution to appease Trump.
When announcing the sanctions against de Moraes, Rubio added that other judges aligned with him and their relatives would also be banned from entering the U.S.
